Eye of the Beholder
There are only a few of my own prints I would consider personal masterworks... prints which, when
complete, surpass my original vision. “Of a Natural Progression” and “Waiting for Moments of Gladness”
are two of these prints and “Eye of the Beholder“ is a third. A virtual cornucopia of images, this print
illustrates through all its elements a diverse understanding of what beauty may be. From the warped
perspective of a distorted face to the traditional representations of beauty embodied in a feather or flower.
The facial diagrams of beauty, at the far left of the print, were provided by Dr. Steven Marquardt, an
accomplished Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon who has himself explored the perception of human beauty in
the form of proportion and balance. My model Kalae is the main subject in this print and can also be seen
in, “Waiting for Moments of Gladness” and “Perspectives”.
"Eye of the Beholder" took many years to complete due to technical challenges, yet as photographic
printmaking materials continue to develop, so does the art work it helps to create. This work was printed
exclusively at the Honolulu Printmaker's Workshop, Hawaii, between 2004- 2007 and is in an edition of
18 prints.
