False Words Spoken
This print was originally created as part of a portfolio project sponsored by the Honolulu Printmakers, the
Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. The idea proposed was for 20
Hawaii artists to visit the Doris Duke Estate and Museum, Shangri La, to be inspired by the incredible
collection and breathtaking environment created in the 1930’s by one of the world's wealthiest women.
The complete portfolio was first exhibited in 2004 at the Doris Duke Theater on the grounds of the Honolulu
Academy of Arts. My contribution to the project, “False Words Spoken,” was inspired by the tradition of
miniature painting in Islamic art, though I recognize I’ve broken with that tradition in the manner and
theme which I chose to pursue in this work.
“False Words Spoken” is in the collections of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the Honolulu
Acadmey of Arts and was printed in an edition of 49 prints.
