Our Place in Space

Yes, the title may be a bit “cheesy” but this print initially began as parts of another print. I was so fascinated by the depth and richness of this mechanical solar system from the British Museum’s collection that I had to use it again

The sky, to the right of the print, was re- exposed from a film used in the print, “Strength From Within” and the ocean surface, to the left, is original to this print and was photographed from the wave-break at Sandy Beach, a famous South Shore Oahu bodysurfing beach.

To the right you can see me inking and hand wiping the first of 2 photo-etching plates. Below are photos of the two primary plates being printed in succession at Artichoke Printworkshop in London.

As with many of my prints, after the primary images are printed I’m finally ready to embellish the print with diagrams or other such drawn material which supports the idea or theme of the print. The first of these diagrams is an image I found in one of my many Anatomical History books showing the comparative anatomy between man and ape.

These images rarely work as well when printed without some kind of visual support so after choosing the diagram I’m going to work with I often have to draw a tonal image in lithography (printed here on newsprint during the proofing stage). In this case the drawing bellow was intended to be printed in a “whited” blue ink so that it would function as a negative image when printed over the dark blue background of the photo-etching.

The linear diagram is then “Xeroxed” from the original, transferred to a freshly prepared lithographic stone, processed and then printed over the top as the “key” image
The final element printed was an antique German diagram measuring the celestial movements of our solar system. This was again produced using the Xerox transfer method in lithography.
