Strength From Within

Strength From Within

"Strength From Within" grew from the idea that there is personal growth and strength through adversity. The model for this print, Ming, was also instrumental in the theme as he wished only to be represented in a work which would reflect something positive. To me, growth is often an internal struggle which can be created by external forces or issues. How we choose to deal with our problems often determines whether our outlook is a positive or negative one.

In this print I chose to paint a birthmark on the image of Ming as this form of physical blemish is with the person from birth and is without fault. It is truly and innocent affliction which none-the-less is often quite hard to ignore visually.

"Strength From Within" is a combination of photo-etching, Spit-Bite Aquatint and numerous traditional stone and photographic lithograhy impressions. It was printed at Artichoke Print Workshop in London and the Honolulu Printmakers Workshop, Hawaii, 2005.
