David B. Smith fine art prints

Rand was first introduced to me by fellow Hawaii artist, Cora Yee. I was looking for a dancer to perform as a devil in the developing print “A Threat Unspecified”. Rand is a model with not only a superbly balanced face but also a striking physique, and was an absolute joy to work with. Taking direction easily and offering up new and exciting poses, Rand proved to be an exceptional artist's model and someone I hope to do more work with in the future.

These are photo’s of Rand rolled up in a very greasey black ink in preparation for directly imprinting his body onto a freshly ground litho stone in order to record his body surface... much like a finger print but more involved! This is for a print yet to be finished.

I took this series of photographs as part of a commission for a South African youth website which delt with the ever increasing issue of AIDS in Africa. Siyavaya is a South African Zulu slang term which roughly means inner strength with energy and pride. Rand was the perfect model for this project and even went to the extent of sculpting his hair for the shoot!
